The ranges of Ratio and Parkside plastic kits is still growing offering a wide range of prototypes from the golden age of the 'big four' through to the British Railways standard designs of the 1950s. Many vehicles are not available ready to run and even where RTR models are available the kits allow the builder to recreate a specific vehicle complete with unique fittings or modifications. A model which will stand out.
We stock a selection of kits from these ranges but can obtain any kit on request with delivery usually within 14 days.

Ratio OO Wagon Kit GWR Iron Mink A 563
The GWR iron mink was built in the early years of the 20th century. Built from iron and well protected by paint these vans were virtually indestructible and many were still in service at the end of WW2. The subtsantial construction was also useful for transporting explosives safely and many were used as improvised gunpowder vans duing two world wars.

This is an easy to build kit, takecare to ensure that the axles are square so it will run well. The wagon can be painted in the GWR dark grey livery, or paint the wagon in black and add gunpowder van markings. Several private owners also ordered wagons based on this design, Spillers (flour) and Ferrocrete (cement) are well-known examples.

Ratio OO Wagon Kit Permanent Way Set (4 wagons) 575
This permanent way train set includes a twin-set of single bolster wagons, close-coupled using a drawbar and two open ballast wagons. A set of steel beams is supplied as a load for the bolster wagons.

The single bolster wagons are more challenging kits as the body cannot be used to help with rigidity. Experience of building wagon kits is recommended, however the kits are well designed and quite simple, building the two open wagons first to gain an understanding of the construction plus care, patience and 'dry run' test assembly will produce excellent results.

Plastic assembly kit to build a model of the two-silo pressure discharge bulk powder wagon, coded Prestwin.

These wagons were built as potential alternatives to the well-known Presflo covered hopper wagons. While this design was popular in mainland Europe they proved less successful for BR, however they did find their niche in service and bring variety to your goods trains.

Like all kits care in assembly is rewarded, especially with this kit from older tooling. Dapol now supply metal wheels, assemble the chassis carefully to ensure that the wheels will turn freely and the completed wagon will run well. Remember to add some weight inside the silos before sealing them up!

Many of these wagons worked on the French railways in the immediate post war period. About 1,900 were assigned to work on the Continent until the early 1950s. A fleet of almost 8,000 operated widely throughout BR until the mid 1960s. Our model gives the modeller the choice of either the original pressed steel side doors or the replacement standard doors, which many sported.

Parkside Dundas OO Southern Railway SECR PMV Parcels Van even planks PC36
The well-known Southern CCT/PMV was derived from the design on which this kit is based. First built by the SECR (South Eastern & Chatham Railway) shortly before grouping. Many of the orginal design, including SECR built vehicles were still in use in the 1970s, though most were in use as engineers stores vans by 1980.
Kit includes metal wheels and bearings. Parts are supplied to model the original SECR or standard SR design.

Around 100 of the Vanwide design wagons were equiped with FAT suspension, roller bearings and air brakes, making them suitable for operation up to 60mph along with the new long type air braked vehicles. These short vans were often needed for traffic to and from older industrial installations and military sites, where track curvatures prevented the new, longer vans from entering.

This kit builds a model of one of these vans, possibly the last 'traditional' sized wagons in revenue service with Britsih Rail. The kit is straightforward to build, the parts fitting together well. Separate suspension and axlebox units are supplied, making fitting and assembly of the chassis details very easy.

A finely moulded plastic kit to build a model of the BR standard 21-ton coal hopper wagon fitted with vacuum train brakes. Coded HTV under the TOPS description scheme many of these wagons were still in service in the 1980s serving the remaining coal concentration distribution depots.

Hopper kits are more complex to construct than open wagons or box vans due to having many awkwardly shaped parts. Taking time to understand the fit of the parts will ensure that you can obtain excellent results from this well designed kit.

Parkside Dundas OO GWR Horsebox Kit PC79
Horsebox vans were a common sight on Briatins railways until the 1960s. This model kit is the GWR design dating from the 1920s, with a grooms' compartment, large side doors to allow horses to be loaded and unloaded easily and a stowage compartment for fodder.
Equiped with passenger type suspension, vacuum brakes and often steam heating these horseboxes would be conveyed by passenger trains on many branchlines and by secondary trains on the mainline. Long trains of horseboxes were also seen sometimes, especially when a major race meet or polo tournament was imminent!

Parkside have produced a good selection of 21-ton hopper wagons kits. This kit builds a model of the earlier LNER design from which the BR design was derived.

Featuring a detailed rivetted body and distinctive high-level brake lever this kit represents a batch built in 1936. Following batches for the LNER and the early batches of the standard BR-built wagons retained many of these features, the raised brake levers being particularly noticable. Around 13,600 wagons were built to this pattern, serving alongside the later BR built examples with the frame-level Morton brake levers (kits PC77 & 78) well into the 1970s. The commonality between these kits for genarally similar wagons also allows for cross-kitting to create models of even more variations.

Joining the recent range of GWR wagons from Parkside is the GWR O13 design china clay wagon.

Designed and built for the specific purpose of hauling Cornish china clay these wagons had an end door to allow rapid discharge and brake gear arranged at the fixed end both sides. 500 were built in 1913, designated diagram O13, but when replacement became due in the early 1950s BR built more wagons to essentially the same design. While the GWR-built wagons were withdrawn in the 1950s the last of this design, modified with ridged tarpaulin covers and widely known as 'clay hoods' (kit available from Ratio), lasted until the 1980s.

Parkside models are detailed model kits which are well designed and easy to assemble with just little attention to cleaning up edges and corners to ensure a good fit. Kits are supplied with Romford wheels and bearings.

The LNER built 30 of these horse boxes in 1938 to a design very similar to those of the other railway companys. Many of these vehicles lasted until the end of regular horse transport by rail in the 1960s, travelling across the entire network under British Railways ownership.

A model kit to construct a detialed model of the early GWR 10-ton 16-foot long covered box van with Dean/Churchward spring applied hand brake.

This wagon type was in use on the railways from introduction in 1907 until 1960, so with such a long timespan this will find a home on many model railways. The kit contains some very finely moulded parts, with plenty of sharp detail and relief, and by following the clear instructions modellers should find this a rewarding model to construct.
Everything is included except the couplings, paint and transfers. The parts are produced in a base grey colour, suitabel for finishing in the GWR dark grey or later BR light grey goods wagon liveries.

The GWR Mica B was an insulated covered box van designed for conveying fresh or pre-chilled meat. Design diagrams were updated as detail specifications changed, diagram X7 covered the wagons built between 1921 and 1923 with the Dean-Churchward spring-applied brake. Some vans were later converted to convey products sensitive to contamination like tea or confectionery and coded TEVAN in the 1930s. Most vans survived into Nationalisation in 1948, a few lasted into the early 1960 and number 79933 is preserved at the Great Western Society at Didcot shed.

Extending the range of GWR design wagons in the Parkside range is the steel bodied diagram Z2 gunpowder van.
Parkside kits are straightforward to build.

These gunpowder vans were built between 1913 and 1926 to carry gunpowder and other explosives. Their design is a breakaway from the more traditional 'Iron Mink' type. Examples lasted until around 1960. Moulded in grey plastic, with brass bearings and metal wheels, this is another high quality wagon kit from Parkside Dundas. Parkside Dundas specialise in wagon kits of types not normally provided for by the ready-to-run manufacturers, so they fill in a very useful gap for many modellers. With clear instructions these kits are a pleasure to build. All the modeller needs to do is paint them and add transfers

Parkside Dundas OO LMS Design Cattle Truck Wagon Kit PC87
The LMS built 2,050 of these large size cattle wagons between 1923 and 1926, replacing many of the short wheelbase small and medium size wagons which had come from the pre-grouping companies. The LMS had a huge cattle traffic varying from local trips to market, to block trains of imported Irish cattle which could need to move long distances from port to market. These longer wheelbase wagons permitted running at higher speeds, reducing journey times and the need to unload cattle for exercise and feeding en-route. The fleet would have been kept fully utilised and these wagons were still in use into the early 1960s. The transportation of cattle in the UK ceased in the mid seventies.

This kit contains all parts necessary to construct one of these vehicles, including wheels and brass bearings. The moulded parts are well produced making construction of the kit a pleasure to do. Full assembly instructions are included and will guide the modeller step by step.

They were a development of the earlier Toad B brake van, which had wooden lookouts and end stanchions: on these new brake vans they were produced in steel. Running on mainly LNER/Eastern Region lines, they lasted well into the later BR period of the 1960s.
The OO wagon kits series is wide and varied, with over 80 in the range. The kits come complete with metal bearings and wheels, and a comprehensive guide on how to build and paint the model is supplied.
Glue and paints are required to assemble and complete the model (not included)

Parkside Dundas OO GWR 10 ton Fruit B Banana Van Kit PC88
Parkside Dundas PC88 GWR Banana Van Kit (GWR Diagram Y4)
During WW1 the GWR converted around 100 ventilated vans for use as emergency insulated meat vans, intending to convert them back to standard after the war. Following the war the import of bananas by refrigerated ships presented the railways with a need for a new type of temperature-controlable fruit van with heating to help ripen the bananas in cold weather. Having these surplus insulated box vans the GWR fitted steam heating and sliding ventilators to these vans to carry the bananas to market, often as a block train running as a fully fitted express goods.
Many stayed in service well into the 1950s, latterly running alongside the BR-design banana vans as produced by Ratio.
This kit, like all other OO kits from Parkside, are extremely well produced and include wheels and bearings. The body mouldings supplied are the same as Parksides GWR V12 ventilated van kit and alternative ends are supplied with the central sliding ventilator.
