Hornby Railways R3510 GWR HST 125 Train Pack GWR Green Livery

September 2015 marked the rebranding of First Great Western as the Great Western Railway and to celebrate this, Hornby have produced a limited edition set featuring Class 43 HST power cars 43187 and 43183, as well as matched Mk3 HST hauled stock. On September 20, 2015, First Great Western changed its name to officially become Great Western Railway, with a corresponding identity redesign being carried out by John Rushworth at Pentagram in London. The brief echoed what the train operating company has referred to as its “renaissance of rail”, a reflection of the £7.5bn investment in the network, as part of the Great Western Mainline initiative. In this new version of the livery scheme the ‘W’ in GWR is oversized, the zig-zag being a suggestion of the electrification to come, whilst also dividing the ‘G’ and ‘R’ more distinctly. The dark green livery references the hue of the Great Western Railway’s original green, rather than being meant as a direct copy and brings a touch of class to the West Country routes.

Hornby Railways OO Gauge R3343 First Great Western Class 08 Shunter 08822 (John) (Bristol, St Philips Marsh) First Group Blue Livery

The Class 08, 0-6-0 diesel electric shunter which was based on the prototype LMS designs, became British Railways largest fleet of locomotives. These locomotives were constructed between 1953 and 1962 at Crewe, Darlington, Derby and Doncaster.

The Class, which includes a number of Class 09 locomotives, has a single cab at the No.1 end and a front section that houses the power unit, generator and control equipment. Class 08 shunters are powered by an English Electric 350hp, 6KT engine and have a maximum speed of 15 – 20mph. The Class once numbered in excess of 1,000 with approximately 300 remaining in service today and still represents the mainstay of the UKs shunting power.

The standard Class 08 locomotives are in operation in most if not all areas of the UK and are expected to remain in service for many years to come. They are employed mainly as shunting units in marshalling yards and shunting depots but are also used occasionally for short trip workings. Built at the Derby Works and outshopped on the 9 September 1960, Class 08 822 was originally numbered D3990 but changed to its current number on the 31 December 1973.

The locomotive is currently based at St. Philips Marsh T&RSMD, Bristol and is one of nine that are operated by First Great Western.

Bachmann Branchline OO Gauge 32-819 Virgin Trains 47814 Totnes Castle Class 47/4 ETH Equiped Locomotive Virgin Trains Red Livery

When Virgin Trains took over the Cross Country franchise following privatisation services were operated with a mix of HST and locomotive hauled trains. BR InterCity had arranged for a small fleet of the ETH equiped class 47/4 locomotives to be fitted with additional fuel tanks, these 'extended range' locos being allocated numbers in the 478xx series and most of this fleet transferred to Virgin Cross Country. Virgin operated the class 47s until sufficient of the new design Voyager trains had entered service in 2001, following which many 478 series engines have found employment with new owners.

Bachmanns' detailed class 47 model features a heavy chassis with six-axle drive from a centrally mounted motor, directional lighting and correct radiator grilles for each locomotive/period depicted.

Bachmann Branchline OO Gauge 32-756 GWR 57603 Tintagel Castle Passenger Service Class 57/6 Co-Co Locomotive New Great Western Railway Green Livery

A superbly detailed model of locomotive 57603 Tintagel Castle painted in the latest GWR green livery.

Following on from the 75mph freight-only class 57s rebuilds for Freighliner Brush Traction built a speculative prototype passenger version with Electric Train Supply (train heating) numbered 57601. Great Western tested the locomotive on daytime and sleeper train services before ordering four locomotives, primarily for the overnight sleeper service.

Bachmanns' model features a heavy die-cast chassis accommodating a centrally mounted motor and flywheel assembly for smooth running driving both bogies and all six axles. The bodyshell tooling was designed to incorporate the detail differences between different series of class 57 locomotives, the Great Western locos having four-section radiator grilles.

Bachmann Branchline OO Gauge 32-764 Northern Belle Class 57/3 57305 Northern Princess Northern Belle Crimson Lake & Cream Pullman Style Livery
57305 was originally rebuilt as a Virgin Trains 'Thunderbird' to provide 'rescue' locomotives for West Coast mainline services, haul all-electric Pendolino tarins to destinations away from the electrified route and maintain services when engineering works required the power to be turned off. Following the loss of the Cross-Country franchise Virgin retained a few diesel-powered Voyager trains to assist with these duties and the 57/3 locomotives were sold on to other operators.
Equiped with Electric Train Supply (train heating) the 57/3s several have been relivereied to match the trains the locos are now working with, including DRS-owned 57305 Northern Princess which hauls the Northern Belle tour trains and is painted in a matching crimson lake and cream styled after the classic Pullman scheme.
